Escom official goes missing

Investigations into the missing of Director of Human Resources and Administration at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) Daphter Namandwa have commenced after three days of his missing.
His car, a Pajero Registration Number DZ 8881 was found abandoned in Mulanje along the road to Mulanje Mission hospital.
Mulanje Police spokesperson, Gresham Ngwira, confirmed in an interview Sunday that Namandwa went missing on the night of Thursday and that the police received a report of his missing from a relative.
“I can confirm that we received the report of such nature that a man went missing on Thursday and from that time of the receipt of the report, we are still investigating. It is a bit difficult to commit as to when we should be through but we are investigating jointly with Escom,” Ngwira said.
Escom Public Relations Manager Innocent Chitosi also confirmed Namandwa’s situation and that investigations on the same are underway.
He further asked Malawians to desist from speculating the reasons for his missing following social media reports that Namandwa was refusing to award contracts to some top officials in the government.
“I have seen such allegations on social media but that is typical of social media; nothing formal. He is Director of Human Resources and Administration and I do not think he handles contracts because he does human resources only and nothing to do with awarding contracts or procurement,” Chitosi said.
Namandwa’s vehicle was taken from Mulanje by Escom officials. His mobile phone and other belongings were in the car.
By the time we went to press, there was no report of the missing official having been traced.
