Music Crossroads Malawi Director, Mathews Mfune, confirmed the development yesterday.

He said the camp, which is aimed at promoting and preserving traditional instruments, is open to everyone who wants to participate.

“We are ready with this year’s camp. Last year, we held it in Mchinji where it was a success but this year we thought of having it at Chingalire which is a very good place. We also indicated last year that we will be rotating it and the idea is to reach out to more people,” Mfune said.

Chingalire Cultural Centre is managed by musician, Ben Mankhamba, who is Village Headman Chingalire.

“We are excited to host the event. We have developed the area and it is now time organisations and event organisers started holding their events here,” Mankhamba said.

The Ethno Malawi Music Camp is also held in other countries and last year saw some participants from Ethno Malawi participating at Ethno Sweden.

“The normal cost for local participants to attend the camp is K75,000 and K100,000 for internationals,” Mfune said.

He said the idea to establish the Ethno Malawi Music Camp was hatched by him and veteran ethno-musician, Charles Chavaramangwere Mkanthama, in 2016, having noticed that the art of playing ethno music instruments was on the decline.

“There has been few initiatives done to ensure that the skill and practice of ethno-music is passed down through generations hence creating this platform. The Ethno Malawi Music Camp is meant to be a medium to encourage cultural exchange in the field of traditional music with different countries,” he said.

Mfune said other international participants that have embraced the camp since it started in Ntchisi include Norway, Brazil, Mozambique and Kenya.
