Ethno Malawi set to send 2 to Ethno Spain

After sending two artists to Ethno Mozambique last month, Ethno Malawi which is led by Music Crossroads Malawi is also sending two artists to Ethno Spain in July this year.
Music Crossroads Malawi Director Mathews Mfune confirmed the development yesterday saying the two artists are Sangwani Ngulube and Khumbo Mkandawire.
““This is not the first time we have sent representatives to other Ethnos, we have had representatives participating at Ethno Croatia, Ethno Sweden, Ethno Mozambique and now Ethno Spain. This is all important in terms of sharing knowledge as far as promoting and preserving culture is concerned,” he said.
Mfune also said that they were waiting for confirmation for Asante Maulidi and Cynthia Duma Nyirongo, who will represent Ethno Malawi at Ethno Flanders.
“This year, we will also send representatives to Ethno Zimbabwe and Ethno Uganda,” Mfune said.
He said their participation in different Ethnos is being supported by Ethno World, a programme of Jeunesses Musicale International (JMI) which Music Crossroads is a proud member.
Meanwhile, Mfune has said that the Ethno Malawi Music Camp will be held at Chingalire Cultural Centre at Nsaru in Lilongwe from May 21 to May 29 2023.
Chingalire Cultural Centre is a hub driven by veteran musician Ben Mankhamba, who is also Village Head Chingalire.
“International participants to this year’s Ethno include two from Uganda, two from Zimbabwe, four from Mozambique, two from Brazil and four from Norway. The rest will be Malawians to make a total of 25 participants,” he said.
Mfune said Ethno Malawi Music Camp has played a crucial role in promoting and preserving culture and that through the platform, artists also get to appreciate traditional instruments which are slowly phasing out.
In another development, the Pakhonde Festival will also be held at Chingalire Cultural Centre from May 26 to May 28 2023 with some of the Ethno Malawi Music camp participants set to perform at the festival.
Some of the artists billed to perform at this year’s festival include Skeffa Chimoto, Lulu, Ndingo Brothers, Katelele Ching’oma, Nyago, Daughters Band, Ethno Malawi crew, Maggie Kadrum, Mbanaye, Kangolwa Band and Mankhamba.
