AMONG THE BEST—Mhango

Former South Africa national football team coach, Steve Komphela, has left Gabadinho Mhango out of his Footballer of the Season list.

Mhango is the current top goal scorer in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) with 14 goals which have seen him join the list of potential candidates for the season’s best player.

But Komphela told soccerladuma.co.za that he does not believe that the Orlando Pirates goal poacher can win the accolade.

“I think he [Mhango] peaked a bit late. But one would pray that he wins the top goalscorer, of which I want [Lennox] Mutizwa [Arrows] to win so that he can feel that the amount of hard work he is put in is rewarded because he has done very well,” he said.

The 2019/20 PSL season is currently suspended after more than 22 rounds of games because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Komphela said while the remaining matches could still throw in a few more surprises, it is easier to spot the stand-out performers.

“Maybe it would go to Nurkovic. I am looking at the ones who made a big difference in their clubs. Chiefs, through the force and power, Nurkovic was the light. [Lebogang] Manyama maybe second or third.

“And if you go to Mamelodi Sundowns, then you have [Gaston] Sirino as the difference maker. When you look at these candidates, you also have to look who won the MTN8 man of the series and the Telkom Knockout and the influential players in the Nedbank Cup,” he said.
