Police could be investigating a fellow officer in Monday’s day-light armed robbery which left one police officer dead and another one seriously injured, a leaked police report on the incident suggests.
Atleast 16 bullets were shot during the incident and K46.4 million belonging to Petroda Malawi Limited was stolen by the armed robbers.
And the memo in this paper’s possession alleges that a former police officer Richard Tsotsi Phiri and other suspects who include a Mr. Makina, Fred Juma and Benson Harawa, whose driving licence and an ATM card were found in a car used in other robberies in area 47, are the main suspects.
‘‘On this date (8th June 2015) No.A 5517 Sergeant Mkokho Village Manyamba, T/A Ntchena, Mulanje District and Constable James Clifford of Chizuma Village, T/A Mphoma, Nkhotakota District were on escort duties of Petroda money in a minibus BQ 3472 Toyota Hiace driven by Mr. Wilson Chikweya and accompanied by an accountant Mr. Hassan Ali a Kenyan national.
“They collected the money, approximately K46.4 million kwacha sales from various filling stations to Petroda Headquarters in area 4 filling station near Kamuzu Central Hospital round about.’ Reads part of the report.
It goes on to indicate that at the time the Petroda staff members were proceeding to FMB Bank and as they approached Cashbuild roundabout, unknown criminals using Nissan Tiida BS 6189 (stolen from Area 9 and belonging to Isaland Investment) blocked the minibus.
“Consequently, the police officers fired one bullet to scare away the criminals who came out of their vehicle and returned fire,” reads the report, adding “in the process, No. A5517 Sgt Anthony Mkokho was killed on the scene while No. B3060 constable James Clifford was shot in the head who sustained serious injuries.
Clifford is now receiving treatment at the Kamuzu Central Hospital,” states the report.
