Exhibitors at the ongoing Malawi International Trade Fair (Mitf) say this year’s theme is important in the production industry as it will try to address import appetite issues the country has.

The 29th Mitf is being held under the theme, ‘Productivity: A Source of Export Competitiveness’.

The theme, according to the organisers of the fair, Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), is aimed at improving the trade balance which is currently worsening in the country.

Rab Processors Group Sales and Distribution Manager, Douglas Mandala, said this year’s theme is very relevant and beneficial to both the industry and the farmers.

“When you look at productivity, it is about producing more at a reasonable price which in turn gives you a reasonable price to sell your products. This will give you an edge to compete on the export market,” Mandala said.

Super Sakuwa Steel Limited, Managing Director, Enock Chithonje, said companies should value production of quality products at very competitive prices.

He said the more companies’ produce, the fewer customers will rely on imported goods.

“We need to up our game in terms of production and rely on local supplies for raw materials. Emphasis should be put on producing goods that will attract the export market, but at a competitive price, without compromising quality at the same time,” Chithonje said.
