Fam considers Flames’ kit options

With the Umbro deal expiring next month, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is considering options before engaging in contract extension negotiations with the England-based sportswear manufacturer.

The association signed a three-year deal with Umbro in 2014.

But Fam Commercial and Marketing Director, Limbani Matola, on Monday said it was not automatic that the association would extend the deal with Umbro.

“We are considering several options. One of the options is to renegotiate the Umbro deal, possibility if they can give us [sportswear] at a competitive price,” Matola explained.

“But now the question is what we are losing if we are to renegotiate. Surely we might compromise quality and other parameters. If that does not look favourable, then the other option is have our own branded jerseys which can give us the leverage to decide on the price, quality and quantity.”

He added that the association would require at least K165 million to sustain Umbro deal after the expiry of the current deal.

“When we are using some sportswear companies like Umbro, Puma and many others they have their conditionalities. They would give you a minimum order quantity of 5500 kits and each jersey is costing around $27.5 (about K30, 000) factory price,” Matola said.

“If we are to take that route it means the jersey would be costing around K35, 000 for sustainable business development. There will be a comparative analysis and macroeconomic indicators on the ground have not changed. It has taken us three years to sell the same quantity at K15, 000 each jersey.”

Matola said the association was considering options in China, India, Dubai and Pakistan.

Fam has been struggling to sell the replica jerseys with many fans saying they were expensive.

Umbro’s products are sold in over 90 countries.
