Fam courts Lazarus Chakwera on Flames promotion

By Williams Gondwa & Ronald Mpaso:
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has courted State President Lazarus Chakwera in the Kuipatsa Moto Flames promotion as it continues with efforts to raise funds for the Malawi National Football Team’s trip to the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in Cameroon.
The development comes barely a month after Fam also engaged the country’s vice president Saulos Chilima in a golf tournament at Lilongwe Golf Club.
Fam Commercial and Marketing Director Limbani Matola said they were grateful that Chakwera had accepted to host a fundraising dinner at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on November 27.
Matola said they were targeting about K75 million from the event.
“We are very grateful to the President for opening doors of the palace for our dinner. This is a very important event. Let me take this opportunity to urge all companies to come forward and join us during this auspicious occasion,” he said.
Acting Presidential Press Secretary Anthony Kasunda said Chakwera was in support of any initiatives aimed at mobilising resources for the Flames’ campaign.
“The President opened the doors of his palace to the fundraising event because he is a champion of sports in the country. His wish is for the Flames to perform well in Cameroon. He, is therefore, calling upon companies, individuals and organisations to contribute towards the cause,” Kasunda said.
In a bid to maximise on its fundraising drive, Fam is also running an SMS promotion whose top prize is a Toyota Sienta and Flames replica jerseys.
Malawi were paired in Group B of the continental showpiece alongside Senegal, Guinea and Zimbabwe.
The Flames are expected to go for camping in Saudi Arabia mid-December.
