Fam diffuses coaches’ saga
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) officials met the Flames Head Coach, Ronny van Geneudgen (RVG), and his deputies— Gerald Phiri senior and Deklerk Msakakuona—in Blantyre Tuesday afternoon to mend the strained relationship between the Belgian and his assistants.
Over the weekend, our sister paper, Malawi News, exposed cracks in the Malawi national football team coaching panel.
A leaked e-mail revealed that Phiri Snr and Msakakuona wrote Fam, through its Technical Director John Kaputa, complaining that the Belgian was accusing them of sabotaging his work.
Fam Vice-President, James Mwenda, who is also the association’s technical sub-committee Vice-Chairperson, described the meeting as fruitful and normal.
Mwenda said they also met the Malawi National Coaches Association. Phiri and Msakakuona reported the matter to the association.
However, Mwenda said Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, was better placed to comment on the outcome of the meeting.
“Yes, the meeting took place at our head office in Chiwembe Township and it started at around 5pm, but it was an in-house issue. We just wanted to bring the technical panel together. For more details, contact Gunda,” he said.
Gunda said all was sorted out and that the technical panel would continue to work together.
“We have resolved the matter and they have agreed to work together to develop Malawi football. Let us not talk much about this issue,” he said.
It was reported that RVG was more comfortable working with his other assistant, Peter Mponda.
The trio are with the under-20 national football team that is preparing for Cosafa Youth Championship scheduled for Zambia in December
