Fam General Secretary gets new deal

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary Alfred Gunda got a timely new year gift after his contract was extended for another two years.

Gunda got vote of confidence during Fam Executive committee quarterly meeting held in Mangochi last week.

His previous contract expired on November 30 this year but the new deal means he will be at the helm of the association until 2025.

In an interview yesterday, Fam president Walter Nyamilandu Manda said the meeting unanimously agreed to extend Gunda’s contract.

“The contract of the General Secretary of Fam has been renewed for another two years following approval of the executive committee at its last meeting,” Nyamilandu said.

Gunda was appointed as Fam GS in 2016 having replaced Suzgo Nyirenda, who then was going to Confederation of Southern African Football Association (Cosafa) where he served as deputy chief executive officer.

However, Gunda was not available for his comment this week.

The former Mzuzu University sports administrator, once served as Fam executive member when he was general secretary for Northern Region Football Association.

Gunda also served as acting senior assistant registrar (academic) at Mzuzu University before he was appointed Fam GS.

Sports analyst George Kaudza Masina, said Gunda deserved the new deal.

“Not surprising. It just shows that he has impressed his bosses. Suffice to say that employment and contractual issues are not supposed to be discussed in public unlike on elected positions,” Kaudza-Masina said.

While in charge of the secretariat, Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, qualified for Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in 2021 under the tutelage of Meck Mwase.

Again, beach soccer national team also qualified for Afcon finals which took place in October in Vilankulo, Mozambique. The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, also reached the final of the Cosafa Women’s Championship in 2021.
