Fam gets tough on Mpira Connect

Gomezgani Zakazaka

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said mandatory Mpira Connect comes into full force with immediate effect.

Fam Competitions and Communications Director Gomezgani Zakazaka, who is also Mpira Connect Platform Manager, said, effective this weekend, only active registered players and officials will be allowed to be involved in official matches.

“We have worked hard in the past three years to train all our stakeholders and put systems in place and we believe this is the time to fully roll out the project,” Zakazaka said.

“As one of way of enforcing Connect Registration, teams will be required to fill a start-list in which they must indicate a Mpira Connect ID number for each player and the technical officials for their match day squad. The match officials will use this start-list for official pre-match team inspection where they will double check the ID number on the sheet against physical Mpira Connect Id card, in addition to a league registration card.”

According to Zakazaka, for the time being, the mandatory Mpira Connect registration will apply to the Super League, regional leagues and women’s Football League.

Over 70 percent of Super League teams have already renewed their players on Mpira Connect.

Civil Service United Team Manager Gabriel Chirwa said there was no need to panic.

“We have only Jaffalie Chande and Bashir Maunde but the rest of the players are already in the system,” Chirwa said.

On his part, Karonga United General Secretary Ramsey Simwaka said the all players have been registered.

Meanwhile, Fam has also warned clubs against registering players who are already in the system using different names and details.

This comes after regional and women’s teams were changing names and details of the players already registered in the system.

Failure to comply, clubs will be fined K50,000, deducted three points and the player will be banned for six months.

The Mpira Connect is an online platform that enables Fam to register its stakeholders in a systematic way to keep track of players, coaches and referees.
