Football Association of Malawi (Fam) will dig deeper into its own pocket to enable Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, participate at the 2022 Hollywoodsbets Cosafa Cup next week as government is yet to provide funds for the trip.

The Flames are expected to depart for South Africa today for the tournament which runs from July 5-17 in Durban, South Africa.

Fam requested government, through Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), for K134 million for this year’s tournament in its budget submitted early this year.

However, as of Friday Fam had not received extra funds from government for the regional showpiece, having also exhausted its allocations.

In an interview Friday, Fam president Walter Nyamilandu Manda confirmed that the association exhausted its allocation for national teams.

“We are self-financing our participation in Cosafa, having exhausted the K200m that was allocated towards Malawi Teams by Sports Council. There is no indication at this stage that there will be extra funds outside the budget that was allocated,” Nyamilandu said.

“We are digging deeper into our coffers to finance the competition using proceeds from replica jerseys, gate collections, among others, because we already exhausted the Fifa allocation on national team.”

Fam submitted a K2.5 billion budget to Sports Council for national team activities this year and early next year.

The budget is for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers, Cosafa Cup, Nation of African Championship (Chan) and other friendly matches.

For the upcoming Afcon qualifiers, the association will need K202 million for the away match against Egypt and K135 million for the home match.

When contacted Friday, Sports Council Public Relations Officer, Edgar Mtulumbwa said he needed time to consult if Fam had made a request for the funds for the tournament.

“It will be premature for me to talk about the allocations of all sports associations,” Mtulumbwa said.

Government has the responsibility of providing funds to all national teams.

Fam and Netball Association of Malawi (Nam) usually get lion’s share from Sports Council.

Last year, Fam got almost K1 billion for World Cup qualifiers and Afcon finals in Cameroon.

Apart from government, Fam also receive grants from Fifa every year.
