The Football Association of Malawi (Fam) will carry out a pilot phase for electronic ticketing system during the inaugural Airtel Top 8 Cup quarter-final matches over the weekend.
The association wants to weigh the viability of the new system before adopting it completely.
The implementation of e-ticketing in football matches has been a challenge in Malawi due to the poor state of the stadiums.
However, the trial phase is likely to happen as Airtel Malawi Limited, which sponsors the cup, has reportedly given Fam the green light to introduce the e-ticketing through smart phones.
Fam Marketing and Commercial Director, Limbani Matola, confirmed agreeing with Airtel to sell the tickets through Airtel Money from today.
Matola said they will carry out the pilot phase for the match between Silver Strikers and Nyasa Big Bullets on Saturday at Bingu National Stadium as well as Kamuzu Barracks and Blue Eagles match at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Sunday.
Matola believes that the two venues are suitable for the electronic system.
He, however, did not rule out the possibility of the initiative facing teething challenges.
“We have been talking about introducing e-ticketing in the country, so we want to try this through the forthcoming Airtel Top 8 matches. We will give a chance to all fans to buy the entrance tickets through their phones. I hope this is the way forward for implementing the system.
“We will still accommodate those who cannot afford the new system by allowing them to buy the tickets on the match day, but we are encouraging them to use the electronic system because it is simple and easier,” Matola explained.
In other quarter-final matches, Mafco meet Moyale Barracks on Saturday at Chitowe Stadium. On Sunday, Be Forward Wanderers will face Azam Tigers at Balaka Ground.
