Fam justifies K1 billion budget

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President Walter Nyamilandu has justified the K1.1 billion budget for Malawi National Football Team’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) and World Cup assignments.
Nyamilandu announced the budget last week when President Lazarus Chakwera hosted the Flames at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe to congratulate the team for making it to the Afcon finals.
He told the Head of State that Fam needs about K575 million for Afcon preparations and K600 million for World Cup qualifiers.
The Afcon finals are scheduled for Cameroon in January while qualifiers for the global football showpiece commence in June.
Nyamilandu said the Flames need at least four friendlies to effectively prepare for the two competitions.
“We need at least two matches at home and another two away. We have to play teams from West Africa. Air travel to West Africa requires about K1.2 million per member of delegation,” he said.
The Fam boss said the Flames would also need to camp oversees and benefit from modern facilities.
“Whatever plans we have for the team require money. Our figures are not coming out of the blues. People should understand that a bigger chunk of this money is going into preparations. We cannot go into such big competitions with shoddy preparations,” Nyamilandu said.
