Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has kept under wraps the identity of outgoing General Secretary, Suzgo Nyirenda’s replacement.
Nyirenda, who has served Fam for 11 years, has secured the post of Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) in South Africa.
Fam Vice-President, James Mwenda, yesterday declined to confirm if Gunda’s name was proposed during the association’s Executive Committee meeting held in Mzuzu over the weekend.
“I cannot disclose what we discussed. The president [Walter Nyamilandu] is going to release a statement on every detail, ranging from the new Flames’ coach to the General Secretary,” he said.
Sources indicate that the meeting settled for Mzuzu University’s (Mzuni) Registrar responsible for administration, Alfred Gunda, as Nyirenda’s replacement.
Gunda, in a separate interview, yesterday could neither confirm nor deny the reports linking him to the job.
“I also just heard about it. What I can say is that an appointment is an appointment, but it has not reached me yet. Of course, I was present during the Fam Executive Committee meeting, but this is an issue regarding me as an individual, so I cannot discuss it with another person,” he said.
While serving as Northern Region Football Association general secretary, Gunda was at the centre of criticism following Mzuni FC’s controversial promotion to the TNM Super League in 2015.
