By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said it has made steady progress in engaging stakeholders to start preparations for hosting this year’s Under-17 Cosafa Cup tournament in September.

Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, said discussions with local stakeholders were going on smoothly at all levels.

“We are continuing with our meetings with relevant stakeholders including the government through Malawi National Council of Sports,” Gunda said.

Former Flames striker, Albert Mpinganjira, said hosting the tournament would help expose young talent.

“The tournament is a great opportunity for the country’s young players. We just need to prepare well in all areas so that we host a successful tournament,” Mpinganjira, who is Be Forward Wanderers Reserve Coach, said.

Expenses for hosting the tournament are heavily subsidised as Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) is responsible for accommodation of all teams as well as local transportation for all teams and officials.

The regional body will also bring experts to train referees, coaches and administrators.

In conjunction with its partners SuperSport and Kwese, Cosafa will also train local media personnel.

Mauritius hosted the previous two editions in 2017 and 2018. Malawi won bronze in 2017 but failed to reach the semifinals last year.

Malawi last hosted the regional youth championship in 2001 and won gold after beating South Africa 4-1.
