Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has shelved plans to recruit an expatriate coach for the Malawi Women’s National Football Team.

This comes almost a year after the association conducted online interviews for the position.

Fam President Walter Nyamilandu said funding is the major challenge to their intentions.

“Ideally, we would have loved an expatriate coach to work with a local but we are challenged financially. So, we are also looking at what we have locally,’’ Nyamilandu said.

The Scorchers are expected to participate in the 2022 Cosafa Cup in South Africa in September.

Nyamilandu said the association would appoint a local coach ahead of the regional tournament.

“This is something we are seriously looking into. We plan to close this gap by end August so that we embark on preparations in earnest,’’ he said.

National Women’s Football Association Chairperson Suzgo Ngwira said: “This is a technical issue. It is being handled accordingly.”

The development means the Scorchers will have to wait longer for a permanent coach.

Last year, Fam revealed plans to recruit a permanent coach for the Scorchers.

This would be a departure from previous arrangements where coaches were being hired on part-time basis.

The last coaches for the Scorchers were McNelbert Kazuwa and Andrew Chikhosi, who were in charge for two years.
