Fam taskforce eyes Lazarus Chakwera, Saulos Chilima


Football Association of Malawi (Fam) resource mobilisation taskforce has disclosed plans to engage State President Lazarus Chakwera and Vice President Saulos Chilima to grace its fundraising activities.

Fam set up the taskforce to fundraise for the Malawi National Football Team, the Flames, ahead of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations finals slated for Yaunde, Cameroon.

The committee’s chairperson Justice Jabbar Alide, said they were confident that Chakwera and Chilima would be part of the exercise.


“We have ‘The Kuipatsa Moto Flames VIP Corporate Golf tournament’s scheduled for Lilongwe Golf Club on Saturday 2nd October 2021. The State Vice President, Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima has graciously accepted to participate in this event.

“On Friday 29th October we are expected to host Kuipatsa Moto Flames VVIP Dinner in Lilongwe and we have extended invitation to the State President, His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to grace this event,” Alide, who is Fam’s first vice president said.

He said for the Flames to prepare for the finals, the senior side needs about K1.493 billion.


“This budget caters for the team’s travel costs, accommodation, air tickets, game appearance fees and bonuses for all the preparatory international friendly and competitive matches the team will participate in between now and December 2021, and the actual participation at Afcon finals in Cameroon.

“Out of the total budget, K926 million has been identified from the government, Fifa and FDH Bank, leaving a deficit of K567 million,” he said.

Alide, who is also chairperson of competitions and marketing committee, said Fam through the taskforce has joined hands with the public and private sector as well as individuals to solicit funds and close the gap.

“The taskforce has set itself a target to raise K450 million,” he said.
