Football Association of Malawi (Fam)’s new Technical Director (TD) Marian Mario Marinica will present his preliminary report on the status of local football this weekend.

Fam President Walter Nyamilandu said Marinica would present the report during the association’s executive committee meeting on Saturday.

“It will essentially be his preliminary assessment of the national team performance and the state of our football so that we can determine the gap to be filled in the short term while we are looking at finding a long-term solution to the woes that our game is facing,” Nyamilandu said.

Marinica asked Malawi National Football Team Coach Meck Mwase, his backroom staff and players to submit reports on the last two 2022 World Cup qualifiers which the Flames lost 4-0 and 1- 0 to Cameroon and Mozambique, respectively.

For the past two weeks, Marinica had been familiarising himself with Malawi football through meetings with TNM Super League coaches in the Central and Northern regions.

The Romanian also watched all Airtel Top 8 Cup second leg quarterfinal matches between Civil Service United and Karonga United and Silver Strikers and TN Stars in Karonga and Dwangwa, respectively.

Last week, Marinica said he was a big fan of fast football.

“I love fast and very fast football focusing on five pillars which are physical, mental, tactical, technical and social,” he told journalists in Mzuzu.

National Football Coaches Association General Secretary Davie Mpima said they expected a lot from the report.

“From what I gathered, it seems he has observed several shortfalls in our football. He also mentioned that some of our players are short,” Mpima said.

The 56-year-old is a Uefa Pro-Licence holder and has worked for several clubs in African countries such as South Africa and Tanzania.
