Fam to engage government on coaches

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Vice-President, James Mwenda, has said they will engage the government on the need to have Malawi national football team assistant coaches on Capital Hill’s payroll.

Since the expiry of contracts for the then Flames’ assistant coaches Gerald Phiri Senior and Deklerk Msakakuona last year, the government has not employed other coaches.

Fam pays the Flames Coach, Ronny van Geneugden (RVG).

“We still have a provision from the government that we can employ coaches. So, we will re-engage the government on the need to have coaches employed by them. Suffice to say that the government has always assisted us when we come up with such proposals,” Mwenda said.

The Flames are yet to have full-time assistant coaches as RVG has been rotating his assistants.

Asked how the hiring of permanent coaches will be done with RVG rotating his assistants, Mwenda said the modalities will be discussed during a Fam Youth and Technical Committee meeting to be held soon.

“All along we have been doing things contrary to the norm by imposing assistants on senior coaches. So, with RVG having stayed in the country for more than a year, he knows the coaches he can work with. During the next technical meeting we will discuss to have permanent coaches,” Mwenda said.

He further said RVG’s rotation of his assistants will have a cut-off point as the team will have a permanent coaching panel.
