Fam to introduce own replica jerseys
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) will introduce its own brand of replica jerseys, the association’s President, Walter Nyamilandu, has disclosed.
Nyamilandu said this on the sidelines of an annual general meeting (AGM) held in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Previous replica jerseys deals with international brands, such as Adidas flopped, hence Fam’s change of approach.
Nyamilandu said the association had ordered a first consignment from China, adding that the material will be affordable to local fans.
“Our plans now are to have our own branded replica kit. The kit will only bear Fam logo and we have already sourced material from China. The replica kit is of great quality and they have special features,” Nyamilandu said.
However, Nyamilandu could not disclose when the first consignment would arrive in the country.
In 2014, Fam and Umbro signed a three-year deal, which is about to expire.
Fam invested an estimated K50 million in the Umbro replica jerseys, but the deal received a lukewarm reception from the fans.
Replica jerseys supplied by companies such as Puma, Adidas and Umbro have been unprofitable in recent years.
