Fam to re-advertise TD job

WAITING GAME—Kinnah

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has said it will re-advertise the post of technical director (TD), after it was not impressed with the crop of short-listed candidates.

A total of 11 coaches including foreigners and locals, applied for the job but the association only short- listed two coaches.

However, Fam president Walter Nyamilandu said they needed to cast the net wider as the association was looking for a highly qualified person.

“The GS has been instructed to re-advertise the vacant post of TD because we didn’t get sufficient applications of qualified candidates to make the interviews competitive. The GS has been advised to go back to the market to extend our search across the globe so that we can recruit the best qualified candidate for the job,” he said.

“Apart from relying on mainstream media alone, Fam will also use social media professional platforms such as LinkedIn as well as soliciting support from Uefa, Fifa and other professional FAs.”

Nyamilandu underscored that the credentials for the candidates were not impressive.

“In short, I was not impressed with the CVs of shortlisted candidates for the post of TD. It’s important that we don’t do a rush job but, rather, we should embark on a rigorous search of the right candidate using the right channels,” he said.

Fam sets tough conditions for the aspirants as the association was looking for a Pro-Licence holder and a degree in sports management.

No local coach has such qualifications.

However, Fam did not disclose the identities of 11 coaches who applied for the job.

Some coaches from Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa applied for the job whereas former Flames coach Kinnah Phiri confirmed that he applied for the job.

Phiri said he was still waiting for communication from Fam.

“I am keeping fingers crossed,” said Phiri, who inspired the Flames to Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) finals in 2010.

The post of TC fell vacant after John Kaputa asked Fam not to renew his contract beyond June 30 2021.

Kaputa served as Fam TD for eight years, having replaced the late Jack Chamangwana in 2013.

Sports analyst George Kaudza Masina questioned Fam’s decision.

“The fact that Fam shortlisted two people for the TD post after fulfilling all the requirements, it does not make sense to readvertise the post unless they have a policy on minimum number of people to be shortlisted for an interview to suffice. This thinking by Chiwembe [Fam] might also be that their preferred candidate might not have made it on the list,” he said.

“Considering the outcry of many stakeholders, readvertising will be the way to go but with reasonable qualifications and not those over ambitious credentials which have failed to attract potential candidates,” he said.
