Fam warns against violence

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has warned Kamuzu Barracks and Be Forward Wanderers fans to refrain from violence during the Saturday’s Fisd Challenge Cup finals at Civo Stadium.

Tension between supporters of the two sides has been high as witnessed on Sunday after Kamuzu Barracks beat Civo 1-0 at the stadium.

The supporters engaged in skirmishes and bitter exchanges of words immediately after the game as one group tried to stop another from entering the pitch with a suspicious-looking stuffed bag.

Fam Competitions Manager, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said the team whose supporters misbehave will bear the consequences.

“Such high-profile games bring a lot of unnecessary tension amongst supporters of opposing teams. But the fans must know that all teams made a commitment at the beginning of the competition to uphold peace at all times.

“So should any of the supporters misbehave, rules will apply. We would not want to be forced to deduct prize money from the teams because of supporters’ misbehaviour,” he said.

Zakazaka further urged the teams to ensure that they follow procedures when using the venue for training sessions.

“Kamuzu Barracks are using Civo as their home ground. We have therefore agreed with the stadium owners that teams will have access to the pitch beginning Friday morning when the hosts will conduct their training session. The visitors will use it in the afternoon. So we expect the teams to comply with the arrangement,” he explained.

Zakazaka also assured the teams and spectators that all issues regarding security and officiation have been finalised.

The winner of the competition will walk away with a prize of K10 million.
