Fama signs deal with Amaryllis Hotel

Barely a month after signing a deal with Latitude 13 to, among other things, provide space for screenings local movies, Film Association of Malawi (Fama) has brokered another deal with Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre.

Fama and Amaryllis Hotel signed the agreement in Blantyre on Monday.

Following the deal, which is for a year and renewable, Amaryllis Hotel will provide space for movie nights, capacity building workshops and other film-related activities.

Fama President Gift Sukez Sukali hailed Amaryllis Hotel for the support saying it will go a long way in giving local filmmakers a platform to screen their films.

“We, as Fama, we are looking at growing the film industry, we want to promote Malawian films and we saw a lack of platforms for them to showcase their work, hence searching for partners. We are happy with this move and we would like to thank Amaryllis for coming to our rescue,” Sukali said.

He said they would announce the calendar for the screenings and that people should keep following the news through Fama and Amaryllis Hotel platforms.

“The trainings and workshops, for instance, are vital in creating quality work and, so, we will be having these moments to empower filmmakers and share ideas,” Sukali said.

Amaryllis Hotel Sales and Marketing Manager Khaira Surtee said their partnership with Fama comes after they noticed a gap for local filmmakers.

“There is no platform for local filmmakers and our coming in is to provide the stage for them because the hotel has been opened for about two years now and I can say that we are getting well patronised and we get a lot of guests here staying in the hotel and this includes a lot of youths as well and, so, we thought we should partner Fama to give out this form of entertainment,” Surtee said.

She said the development will also give a chance to up-and-coming filmmakers to show their craft.

Amaryllis Hotel seems to have taken interest in the creative sector and recently brand ambassador.

“We have decided to partner a lot of creatives. We have the capacity and platform and our aim is to support artists and try our level best to uplift the youth. We have got a lot of proposals from the creatives including youth and, so, we want to make youth busy,” Surtee said.
