TNM Super League teams will have to put on hold their battle for points and concentrate on ensuring their survival in the inaugural Fisd Challenge Cup.
The 16 top-flight sides join the fray Saturday and Sunday as they get set to knock each other out of the season’s last cup competition.
Of particular interest will be today’s match involving Nyasa Big Bullets and Premier Bet Wizards at Kamuzu Stadium.
Officials from both sides have described Saturday’s tie as a family affair as their players and officials have worked together before.
Wizards Technical Director, Peter Mponda, said the two sides share a lot in common.
Wizards’ coaching panel comprises ex-Bullets’ players, MacDonald Yobe and Fundi Akidu, while club chairperson, Ophman Kondowe, served as Bullets’ general secretary a decade ago.
“Those of us in the Wizards technical panel are former Bullets players. Most of our administrators have also been at Bullets. We also have two players at Bullets who came from Wizards. So it is a family affair,” Mponda explained.
The former Flames captain said his team will be out to revenge the 2-0 loss suffered at the hands of Bullets in the league’s first round.
“Anything is possible in this match. Remember we held Bullets to a one-all draw in the first round of the Super League [in 2015]? So expect anything to happen,” Mponda challenged.
Bullets’ Team Manager, Rahim Ishmael, concurred with Mponda that the tie has all the characteristics of a family affair.
“This is what makes this match interesting. We know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. They know how we operate on the pitch and we understand their thinking,” Ishmael said.
While the Presidential Cup champions will be boosted by the return of versatile Chikondi Likwemba, Ishmael said Bashir Maunde, Ernest
Kakhobwe, Chikumbutso Kanyenda, John Lanjesi and Mike Mkwate are still injured.
Former Wizards midfielder, Tilekeleni Joseph, is likely to be the centre of attention as he will be meeting his former side for the second time in a month since crossing over to Bullets.
Joseph was merciless as he scored on his debut to condemn his former side to the first round league loss.
