Some members of Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Technical Sub-committee have distanced themselves from recommending the hiring of Marian Mario Marinica as Flames coach and the firing of Meck Mwase.
On Saturday, Fam executive committee appointed Marinica as Flames head coach replacing Mwase.
The technical committee, which Tiya Somba-Banda heads, has the mandate to recommend to the executive committee the hiring and firing of all national teams coaches.
In random interviews, four members of sub-technical committee claim that they were sidelined on key decisions as the committee has never met since July last year.
In an interview, Kelvin Mmangisa said it was unfortunate that the committee was never approached for its recommendations.
“It is sad that decisions are made by few individuals yet the committee has seven members. To be honest, I am not part of the mess,” Mmangisa said.
“As a technical committee, we have never even met Marinica to appreciate his ideas for Malawi football.”
According to Fam statutes the Fam sub-committee shall be responsible for overseeing of all technical aspects of the game such as coaching, grassroots and youth development, women football, beach soccer and futsal.
Fam technical sub-committee comprises Somba-Banda as chairperson with Sugzo Ngwira as his deputy. Other members are Humphreys Mvula, Julius Mithi, Yasin Osman and National Football Coaches Association (NFCA) Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni.
In a separate interview, Osman also shared similar sentiments to Mmangisa.
“I am just hearing from the press all these decisions. As a committee, we have the responsibility to recommend hiring and firing of coaches but this is not the case,” Osman, who previously worked as Fam general secretary, said.
Marinica arrived in Malawi as Fam Technical Director on a three-year deal.
But he has ceased to be the TD and has been replaced by Benjamin Kumwenda.
The Romanian was chosen as TD through virtual interview.
However, only three members of the sub technical committee namely Somba-Banda, Nankhuni and Mvula were part of the interviewing panel.
Mvula confirmed that he was part of the panel.
However, Somba-Banda was yet to respond to our questionnaire yesterday while Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda was tied up with church engagements.
Mwase has already taken legal action against Fam for constructive dismissal.
He is claiming K500 million in damages.
Sports analyst Peterkins Kayira said it was wrong for Fam executive committee to use their powers to make decisions without recommendations from the technical committee.
“It means there are very few individuals who are making such decisions. Fam has a committee but it is deliberately choosing to ignore it which is very wrong,” he said.
Fam statues also states that the sub-technical committee shall analyse the basic aspects of football training and technical development in football.
It shall be in charge of Fam’s development programmes, devising and proposing appropriate strategies and analysing the support and programmes provided to the members of Fam and providing advice to the executive on development matters in general.
