‘Farmers should be business-minded’
By Isaac Salima:
Farmers in the country have been urged to take the trade as a business for economic transformation and personal development.
The call was made recently when Wangisa Production and Marketing Society Limited received a certificate to operate as a cooperative in enhancing its recognition as a legal business entity.
Nsanje District Principal Agriculture Officer Whytone Foly said the sector remains relevant to the economy.
“This is a step forward towards having more farmer groups engaging in agribusiness. Previously, farmers were not interested in working in groups but now the story is different as we have several cooperatives which means that our aim of commercialising agriculture is being achieved,” Foly said.
Concern Worldwide through Graduation Model project has introduced the farmers to orange sweet potato farming where they are able to sell both potato seeds and potatoes for consumption.
Concern World Wide Nsanje District Programmes Manager Tommy Chimpanzi said he is impressed that the aim of the project is being achieved.
