Malawian business magnate and FDH Holdings Chief Executive Officer Dr Thom Mpinganjira on Friday scooped the Large Scale Enterprise of the year individual award during the 2015 Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Innovation Awards.
Mpinganjira, the only Malawian to have majority stakes in two commercial banks namely FDH Bank and Malawi Savings Bank, beat renowned businessman Jimmy Korea Mpatsa to the award.
The tycoon carted home K500,000 and one month trip to Egypt and China.
Speaking in an interview, Mpinganjira described the award as an honour.
“I am simply overwhelmed. I am humbled. I would like to thank those who nominated me for the award and MBC for coming up with the idea.
“The prizes are amazing: In addition to K500,000 cash there is one month trip to Egypt and one month trip to China. This is amazing,” said Mpinganjira.
He said the awards are a step in the right direction for Malawi, adding that this will motivate Malawians to work hard and inculcate integrity in the populace.
In the small-scale enterprise category, Davis Kansenza beat Rachel Sibande to claim the top prize.
Kansenza also went home with cash and the international trips.
The awards were presided over by President Peter Mutharika who said innovation could help Malawi address some of the challenges the country is facing.
