Groupings that are advocating for federalism in the Northern Region Tuesday demonstrated their hypocrisy by attending what they called ‘useless’ a regional stakeholders’ on inclusivity and federalism meeting organised by the Public Affairs Committee (Pac) in Mzuzu where they also collected allowances.
Recently and also in a fresh interview Tuesday, chairperson of Coalition for Federalism (Cofe), Bina Shaba, described Pac meetings on federalism debate as useless and a waste of time but he and his group attended the meeting yesterday. Shaba’s stand is that Pac educating the masses on federalism instead of organising debates.
And on Monday, Secretary General of the grouping Harris Kanyeremuka expressed happiness that he would be accommodated at a hotel for the meeting where he would also pocket allowances when stormed The Daily Times offices and boasted about the meeting.
On Tuesday Shaba did not protest at the beginning of the meeting at 8.45am as Pac chairperson Reverend Felix Chingota gave his opening speech.
Instead, Shaba and his Cofe members, politicians, religious leaders such as CCAP Synod of Livingstonia General Secretary Reverend Levi Nyondo, academicians and other businesspeople were all smiles and were seen clapping as Chingota delivered the speech.
Shaba and his team showed cowardice for failing to tell Pac in the face about the “irrelevance” of the meeting but instead emptied their chest to the press during interviews and Pac trashed him in return.
“We are completely of the view that such meetings are totally useless for the local people who are crying for a change of the current unitary system of government to a federal system. We cannot be staying in this air-conditioned room debating issues that are obvious. These meetings could have not been done. That is our stand,” argued Shaba.
But Pac spokesperson Father Peter Mulomole trashed Shaba in an interview, challenging him that education could not be useless.
“It is sad that some participants are saying our congregating here is useless. Education cannot be called useless. Let the participants not be emotional on this matter. Pac does not have any stand on the federalism calls,” he said.
