Former World Boxing Federation Intercontinental female bantamweight champion Ellen Simwaka made a winning return to the ring after knocking out former World Boxing Forum champion Gabisile Tshabalala in the fourth round.
Initially, the non-title bout was scheduled for six rounds but the South Africa based Malawian pugilist showed her ruthlessness to win the contest at Cambridge Commercial Park in Johannesburg on Thursday night.
Simwaka said she desperately wanted to win to dust herself off after a long layoff as she pushes for a title fight.
“It means a lot as I needed this so badly after two years of no action. The win will open new windows of opportunities in my career because I need a title fight,” she said.
The 24-year-old boxer hailed her trainer Vusi Mtolo of Rub Boxing Gym in Edenvale for a good game plan.
“The plan was to cut the ring since she (Gabisile) is a smart boxer and our game plan worked,” she said.
Following the win, Simwaka has improved her record to 10 wins, five defeats and two draws.
Simwaka last fought on October 17, 2020 when she defeated Melissa Muller through a technical knockout.
