CHAMASOWA—We thought the few on the ground should be encouraged

Female poets will be decorated at the Mchezo wa Ndakatulo gathering to be held at Blantyre Cultural Centre (BCC) on Sunday.

Poet Hudson Chamasowa, who is one of the members of the organising team, said Thursday, they decided to recognise female poets to motivate them to continue their works.

“If you patronise poetry gatherings, you will notice that we have a few female poets.

“So, we thought the few who are on the ground should be encouraged,” Chamasowa, famed for the poem ‘Ku Simongoliya’, said.

Mchezo wa Ndakatulo comes barely four days after the world celebrated World Poetry Day.

The country did not have any activities on the day, with Poetry Association of Malawi (Pam) president Chisomo Mdalla, saying they would support other activities, citing Mchezo wa Ndakatulo.

Chamasowa said the gathering will also act as a platform for celebrating World Poetry Day.

“We are looking forward to the best during the event and we call upon people to come in large numbers and sample poems. It’s been sometime since a poetry event was held at Blantyre Cultural Centre and, as such, we are set for the show,” Chamasowa said.

Chamasowa, Joseph Madzedze, Wamtali Savala Gogoda, Yohane Pangani, Judy Kosa, Raphael Sitima, Darlington Sally and comedians Che Muthinda and Mologeni as some of the poets on course to perform while Abengo Theatre will add a dramatic angle to the event.
