Feminart Festival Kicks-off Saturday

The two-day inaugural Feminart Arts and Book Festival starts today in Lilongwe and will be held at two venues – Crossroads Hotel and Madsoc Theatre.

Crossroads Hotel will host the event tomorrow with Madsoc Theatre hosting the festival on Sunday.

The festival driven by writer and founder of Story Club, Shadreck Chikoti, will be headlined by Zimbabwean renowned writer Tsitsi Dangarembga, who jets in the country today.

“We are ready with the festival. Everything is in place. Zukiswa Wanner and James Murua are already in. They arrived today [Thursday] from Kenya. Zukiswa is from South Africa but is based in Kenya,” Chikoti said.

He said Story Club has a deliberate focus on art for social change and that Feminart was art for feminism Open to the public.

The festival is expected to feature other activities including children’s reading and writing, reading marathon, film screening and book chart.

Other acts set to light the festival include The Daughters Band, Lily Banda, Phindu Banda, Yolanda Kaluma, George Kalukusha and Chitenje Changa monologues.

Zilanie Gondwe, who is also expected to be the guest of honour during the festival, said they were happy to stage Chitenje Changa Monologues.

“This is a new edition of our Ensler inspired monologues play,” Gondwe said.
