Fifa/Fam Under-16 coaches irked over allowances

Some Fifa/Fam Under-16 League district coaches have hit at Football Association of Malawi (Fam) over failure to pay them allowances since the suspension of the developmental competition in March due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The coaches receive a monthly allowance of K35,000 each.

Four coaches; Mario Gadaga (Blantyre), Limbani Mwakhwawa (Kasungu) Shadreck Chiundiza (Nkhata Bay) and John Mofolo (Ntcheu) have voiced out their concerns.

Gadaga wondered why other Fam partners were benefitting from Fifa money during this period when football is on break due to the pandemic.

“Referees are some of the beneficiaries of Covid-19 Relief Fund yet they are also not working. Why is Fam not placing us on the same programme like the rest. We need our allowances. It has been six months without any allowance,” he said.

Chiundiza echoed similar sentiments, saying their efforts to get allowances proved futile.

“We are asking Fam to put us on the Covid-19 beneficiary list. We also have families to look after and we need this money,” he said.

Similarly, Mwakhwawa asked Fam to consider giving them their allowances, for the project to be a success.

“We are tasked with the important role of unearthing talent and nurturing to become a proper footballer but have been left on the Covid-19 beneficiary list,” he said.

Fam Youth Development Officer James Sangala, who is responsible for the project, said he was not better placed to comment on the matter.

Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda said Fifa/Fam Under-16 District coaches are paid based on their work.

“The coaches support the programme as a project which operates within set parameters and principal one being that their engagement is activity based and is remunerated as such like any other programme. At the point we advised a stop in activity, all aspects of the same stopped and will resume with the resumption of the programme,” he said.

Government suspended all sports activities on March 20 this year to halt the spread of coronavirus.
