IMPROVED ON ACCURACY—Kumwenda

Malawi netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda has expressed satisfaction with her Australia Suncorp Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens which registered its fifth consecutive win on Sunday.

Vixens defeated Sunshine Coast Lightning 64-60 to cement their place at the top of the ladder with 40 points from 12 games.

According to melbournevixens.com.au, Lightning were fully aware of Kumwenda’s threat and deployed a former Vixen to neutralise her attacking prowess.

“The Lightning made a couple of changes with former Vixen, Kadie-Ann Dehaney, coming on to combat Mwai Kumwenda under the post,” the website’s report reads.

However, Dehaney’s efforts were not good enough to deter Kumwenda, who still managed to find her way through.

“The Vixens steadied during the third quarter with Mwai Kumwenda improving her accuracy under the post and Kiera Austing landing her team’s first super shot to extend their lead to 49-43,” reports supernetball.com.au.

Kumwenda described the game as tough.

“It was a tough game as our opponents also wanted to win. But we fought our way through to collect full points. I am proud of my team’s performance,” she said.

Vixens Coach Simone McKinnis said she was proud of the effort the team put in throughout the four quarters.

“I think we had a good start to the game. I really enjoyed the start, you look at that last quarter and you look at the fight, the composure, and the heart they put in against Lightning,” she said.

Vixens hit the road for the final time in the home-and-away season against Adelaide Thunderbirds in a Round 13 encounter on Saturday.
