In its drive aimed at developing the film industry in the country, Film Association of Malawi (Fama) has partnered Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre.

The partnership will see the launch of a new monthly series – Movie Night in Mandala on Saturday night every month starting from April 2 2022.

Fama and JCC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the partnership on Wednesday.

Movie Night in Mandala adds to the several activities that JCC holds at the venue including Theatre in Mandala and Sounds of Malawi Acoustic session.

JCC Director Luc Deschamps said the goal of the movie series was to promote films made in Malawi as well as attract an audience for filmmakers, actors and actresses from Malawi.

“We are thrilled to launch this partnership and we are looking forward to the Movie Night in Mandala. This is a perfect setting for movie premieres and screenings. Film directors, producers, actresses and actors need a venue in Blantyre where they can feature their productions and we are happy to offer this venue,” Deschamps said.

He said, apart from offering space, they will also offer expertise and workshops organised by Fama.

“We currently have one Jacaranda School graduate, Reuben Salima, studying on a scholarship at Don Bosco International Academy in Paris, France. We know how valuable the movie industry can be and we want to be part of this effort in Malawi,” Deschamps said.

He said a vibrant film industry can create a lot of jobs for the youth and generate revenue.

Fama Secretary General James Kitchen said they were happy to work with JCC.

“We want to create more partners and we are happy to have partnered JCC. Through this platform, we are targeting to reach out to more players as well as train the youth,” Kitchen said.

Fama has also made partnerships with Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre and Latitude 13 in Lilongwe, among others.
