Filmmaker honoured with African Women Film Ambassador Award

Award-winning filmmaker and actress Joyce Mhango Chavula continues to make steps in the industry as she has been decorated with the African Women Film Ambassador Award at this year’s edition of African Women Arts and Film Festival (Awaffest).

In a letter dated March 25 2023, organisers of Awaffest have since congratulated Chavula Mhango for the achievement.

“Congratulations on your being honoured with the African Women Film Ambassador Award at this year’s edition of African Women Arts and Film Festival,” reads the letter signed by Director, Awaffest – Zambia Musola Cathrine Kaseketi and founder Kelechi Eke.

Mhango Chavula has since travelled to Zambia following an invitation to the fifth edition of the event which started on March 25 2023 and ends tomorrow.

The letter says over five days and five nights, the attendees are expected to among others enjoy film screenings, networking with other professionals, filmmaking training workshop for young women and men and film forum on women on the director’s seat challenges they face.

The climax will be the awards ceremony where Chavula Mhango will officially receive her award.

“It is an honour to be a recipient of this award. I know exactly where I am in my career right now, I know longer ask why or how, I just thank God. It has been years of work and I am grateful,” she said.

Chavula has starred in a number of films and plays and her films include Lilongwe, which won her an award in the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCAs) – Best Film Southern Africa in 2016 and No More Tears.

Awaffest aims at empowering young women across Africa.
