Fire destroys bakery
Fire on Monday destroyed a Bakery at Area 36 in Lilongwe.
This could probably be a summary of a year plagued by market fires. Area
18, Kasungu, Mzuzu, and Mzimba markets have been some of the markets
destroyed by fires in the year.
Cookies Bakery was up in flames after what is suspected to be power surge
caused the inferno.
The fire started at around 9:30 in the morning. Fortunately Lilongwe City
Council fire brigade arrived at the scene within 20 minutes and managed to
restrict the inferno to the Bakery.
According to an eye witness, Davison Steven, there was smoke coming from
the bakery, before flames were seen.
“People started taking out the some items from the adjacent retail shop.
However the fire did not spread to other parts of the building,” Steven
says.
The whole building houses close ten shops. Some of the businesses plying
their trade in the building are a pharmacy, an internet cafe and butchery.
Owner of the Bakery, Samson Kondowe, said the fire was caused by some
fluctuation in power levels.
“I’m told that there were some fluctuations in power levels. This cause
some fuses to burst, leading to the fire,” Kondowe said.
He was however quick to acknowledge efforts by Lilongwe City Council Fire
Brigade.
“They managed to control the fire. They did their best,” Kondowe said.
He could, however, not answer further questions.
