By Isaac Salima:
Fire Wednesday destroyed part of an ITN Arcade building belonging to Shabil Nathan in Limbe in Blantyre.
One of the shop owners Harry Dambuleni, a phone repairer, said the cause of the fire was not known as he only saw it emerging from a ceiling in his shop.
“We were busy doing our work when we saw the fire in the ceiling. We could not do anything to save the situation and most of our property has been destroyed,” Dambuleni said.
The value of the destroyed property is not yet known but most of the shops destroyed belong to phone repairers and those who offer computer services.
When we rushed to the scene around 5pm, fire fighters were still trying to extinguish the inferno.
The building’s administrator Davies Kavuta also said he was in the dark on the cause of the accident.
In another incident, raging fires Wednesday swept through Zomba Mountain, destroying hectares and hectares of vegetation in the process.
The fire was reportedly first observed around 10 in the morning. Its cause was not yet known by the time we went to press.
Almost a month ago, fire also destroyed part of the mountain which has previously been heavily hit by unscrupulous individuals cutting down trees there and sometimes setting fires to clear the way as they go up the massif to look for firewood.
