Fire razes down Chaponda’s office
Minister of Agriculture Dr George Chaponda’s office is on fire at Capitol Hill in Lilongwe.
Our reporter on the ground says the Minister’s office is being razed down by the fierce fire which has spread to other offices in the Ministry of Agriculture building.
Fire-fighters are on the scene while government workers quickly fled out.
The incident raised debate in Parliament when Rumphi East Member of Parliament Kamlepo Kalua alerted the house on the fire.
Chaponda himself had just walked out of the house when the Deputy Speaker commented on the fire incident.
Incidentally, the fire comes barely days after findings of the Commission of Inquiry instituted by President Peter Mutharika implicated Chaponda as being suspected of ‘inappropriate, suspicious and corrupt’ dealings in the maize deal.
Several quarters including the Malawi Law Society, Opposition Members of Parliament and the Civil Society community have called on President Mutharika to fire Chaponds for his involvement and implication in the controversial maize deal.
