ZUR—The concept is relatively new

Local ICT firm, The Mile, has partnered South African-based firm, Qlik, in offering special training on data analytics to local specialists.

Data analytics—a science of analysing raw data in order to make conclusions about that particular information— is a new phenomenon in most parts of Africa.

It is now being used by institutions, mostly businesses and governments, in determining various trends.

Speaking on Tuesday, on the sidelines of a day-long training, The Mile Managing Director, Mirriam Nsomba, said the course was aimed at narrowing the knowledge gap in the industry.

“The Mile has partnered Qlik and we are introducing data analytics on the Malawi market. The reason is to ease data processing pressure in organisations,” Nsomba said.

She said the firm was targeting organisations, including financial institutions, other businesses and government departments and ministries.

One of the facilitators, Niran Zur, said data analytics had become a critical component in running businesses.

He said the industry was using data analytics for business intelligence and as a step towards making informed business decisions.

“There is data in every industry and we believe that, in order to improve on something, you need to measure something and that is power of analytics and data. It is really across all sectors.

“It is a concept that is relatively new but it is being adopted throughout. There is an issue on data illiteracy that is to be looked up and we are offering progreammes on addressing that as well,” Zur said.

He said, with the growth prospects for Africa, systematic data analytics was way to go as there is a correlation between the sector and development.
