Firm vows to revive banana production

Agricos, a horticultural consultancy firm, has vowed to help towards reviving banana production in the country using sustainable agriculture production practices.

Agricos Commercial Manager, Winston Bergi, said it is a pity that Malawi is importing bananas when it has potential to revive local production.

Bergi made the remarks in Lilongwe on Sunday during a training the company organised to equip and sharpen skills of smallholder horticultural farmers in production and marketing of bananas, watermelons and capsicum (green, yellow and red pepper).

Malawi’s banana industry is facing extinction following the outbreak of the banana bunchy top disease.

Caused by banana bunchy top virus, this disease, found in many of the country’s production sites has led to low production.

“Agricos aims at promoting the agriculture sector and creating jobs for the youth as well as turning around the livelihood of local farmers through farming,” he said.

Ethel Chimpeni, a Lilongwe-based farmer, said the mentorship and training Agricos has been providing have assisted develop her farm in Nkhotakota.
