Fischer Kondowe stripped of Big Bullets captaincy

Nyasa Big Bullets have named Flames forward, Chiukepo Msowoya, as the new captain for the TNM Super League champions after axing Fischer Kondowe and his deputy, Pilirani Zonda.

Msowoya wore the armband when Bullets played Dynamos of Zimbabwe during two friendly games over the weekend.

Apparently, Kondowe and Zonda were named captains at the start of last season to replace Henry Kabichi and Sankhani Mkandawire.

This time around, last season’s Player of-the- Season and top goal scorer, Msowoya, is being deputised by Mkandawire and Bashir Maunde.

Bullets technical director, Billy Tewesa, said there was no ill-intention after replacing Kondowe and Zonda with the trio.

“Each season, we are supposed to select a team captain. We have settled for Chiukepo with Sankhani as the first vice-captain and Bashir as the second vice-captain. We want to give each player an opportunity to lead fellow players on the field of play,” he said.

However, Fischer while welcoming the move, questioned the rationale behind the change of captains every season.

“I am not against the decision. I welcome it and I will continue serving the team. However, I think it is not right to change the captains every season. We need to adopt what our counterparts in foreign countries, including here in Malawi, do,” he said.

Kondowe, however, said as an aging player, he was not worried with the development as it will ensure responsibility and transition in the team.

Zonda has since offered to support the new captains, noting that “it was a blessing and an honour to lead Bullets. During our reign, we defended the league and reached Carlsberg Cup final.”

Meanwhile, Bullets continue with 2016 TNM Super League preparations by playing against Mafco and Dwasco on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
