Five former South Africa national football team stars have confirmed their participation in Joseph Kamwendo’s testimonial match slated for Kamuzu Stadium on March 7.
A member of the game’s organising committee, Prince Chikweba, said Sibusiso Zuma, Katlego Mashego, Joseph Makhanya, Steve Lekoelea, Benedict Vilakazi and Bennet Chenene will be in the country for the testimonial.
“We are making good progress in our preparations. The match is the first of its kind and we are delighted that the five Bafana Bafana legends have confirmed their coming,” Chikweba said.
He said they were hopeful that organisations and individuals would support the initiative.
“We have approached several companies and individuals who have expressed interest to support us. We need resources for the event to be successful,” Chikweba said.
In a recorded video clip, Zuma said he cannot wait to play in Malawi and honour Kamwendo.
The former Malawi national football team and Be Forward Wanderers midfielder announced his retirement from active football in December last year.
He said organising the farewell match in Blantyre was also a way of paying tribute to various stakeholders who supported him throughout his career.
Besides also playing for Civo United, Kamwendo has played for clubs in countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe and Denmark.
