Malawi women’s national football team captain Tabitha Chawinga’s quest to retain the Chinese Women’s golden boot award this season faces litmus test as she trails by five goals in the race.

Sole Jaimes of Changchun Dazhong Zhuoye is the current leading goal scorer with nine goals followed by Zambian Barbra Banda of Shanghai Shengli and Brazilian Rafaelle of Changchun who have scored five goals.

Tabitha is third on the scorers’ chart with four goals alongside three players namely Tang Jiali, Ma Xiaoxu and Wang Shanshan. Her young sister Temwa has scored three goals in her debut season in the Chinese Women’s Super League.

The Scorchers forward has dominated the Chinese Women’s Super League for the past two years having won both Player of the Year and Top Goal scorer accolades.

Tabitha refused to press a panic button saying the race was not over.

“With God everything is possible and I can win it again. It is tough this season but I will not give up without a fight. It is just a bad patch for our team,” she said.

Tabitha’s team suffered another humiliating 3-0 defeat to Shanghai RCB just two weeks after they also lost by a similar margin to Wuhan Jiangda.

Following the two defeats, Sunning occupy fifth spot in the Chinese Women’s Super League with nine points from five games, six points behind leaders Shanghai RCB whereas Temwa’s team is on second position with 15 points.

Tabitha, who moved to China from Sweden, two years ago has been on the radar of some European giants including Olympic Lyonnais and PSG. The former DD Sunshine striker helped Sunning to win a treble last year. She also was also named as Player of the Year and finished as the top goal scorer with 12 goals in the league, having scored 17 goals in her debut season in 2018.
