Malawi national football team caretaker coach, Meke Mwase, has issued a stern warning to his charges on social media conduct.

The development comes after Silver Strikers goalkeeper, Brighton Munthali, expressed his dismay on his facebook page for not being named in the starting 11 against eSwantini in a 2020 Africa Championship qualifier at Mavuso Sports Centre in Manzini on Saturday.

“We cannot all compete in a certain team let the best be the best don’t favour coz [because] the one u[you] want he plays for your team,” posted the goal minder.

The post went viral on social media two hours before the Flames’ match.

It is believed that the youthful shot stopper was not amused after he was left out for Nyasa Big Bullets’ goalkeeper Ernest Kakhobwe who has now kept two successive clean sheets.

Mwase said he understood the player but wanted all the players to refrain from posting on social media things that might jeopardise the side.

“I had a word with the rest of the team to avoid posting such things whenever in camp. We need to be united. If they have any grievances they can channel them to me through other officials such as the other coaches Lovemore [Fazili[, Bob [Mpinganjira], Swadick [Sanudi], Team Manager [James Sangala] or even the Team Doctor,” he said.

Mwase said he will punish any player that will post such things in future.

“We need to be moving as one. Anyway I don’t expect such things in future because we talked at length with the players,” he said.

Meanwhile, Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Competition and Media Director, Gomezgani Zakazaka, said they plan to hold a workshop to show the players how to handle social media and conduct themselves during interviews.

“We will have the workshop once the Flames regroup for the return match against eSwantini,” he said.

Zakazaka said they were developing a communication policy which everyone who is under the association must follow.

“The communication policy is almost through and it will guide everyone on how to communicate. It is meant for players, administrators, coaches, the executive and the secretariat among others. Sometimes others are excited to talk when they are not mandated or when it is not their obligation,” he said.

Flames were held to a goalless draw by eSwantini and the return leg is set for May 11.
