Malawi National Football Team has dropped three places on the latest Fifa ranking released Thursday.

The ranking indicates that the Flames are on position 118 from 115 with 1,154 points.

The Flames lost 2-0 to Tanzania in an international friendly in June this year and the result is likely to have contributed to the fall.

Malawi had a disappointing Cosafa Cup campaign in South Africa which saw them getting booted out of the regional showpiece with two losses and two draws.

However, the tournament has little impact on the Fifa ranking as it is considered in Category B and is played outside the Fifa calendar.

Flames Coach Meck Mwase described the fall as unfortunate.

“It is a bad development for us but we will continue working hard so that we move up,” Mwase said.

Football consultant Kelvin Moyo said he saw it coming.

“I expected this fall because the Flames have been inactive for some time. The loss to Tanzania might have also contributed a lot,” Moyo said.

Senegal are the highest ranked team in Africa and are on position 21 in the world with 1,543 points.

Belgium remain the top team in the world with 1,822 points followed by Brazil (1,798 points) and France (1,762).
