Flames fans to rally behind Ethiopia

Yona Malunga

Top Malawi National Football Team supporters have pledged to rally behind Ethiopia in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Group D qualifier against Egypt at Bingu National Stadium (BNS) in Lilongwe this evening.

Self-proclaimed Flames chief supporter Yona Malunga said Ethiopia are capable of frustrating favourites Egypt with good vocal support.

“Everyone is aware that Egypt considered favourites in this group. However, Ethiopia are not a bad side and can hold or even shock Egypt. This is why we are mobilising each other to watch the match in large numbers.

“Our goal is to cheer Ethiopia to victory so that Egypt should not overtake The Flames. We also need to repay Ethiopia for choosing Bingu National Stadium as their home ground,” the former Mighty Mukuru Wanderers supporters committee chairperson said.

Similarly, former Silver Strikers supporters committee chairperson Kingsley Malaya said a win for Ethiopia this evening would be favourable for Malawi.

“Malunga and I have agreed to mobilise support for Ethiopia so that they surprise Egypt. As we are fighting our own battles, we also need other teams to fight for us. We have confidence in Ethiopia’s ability to get a good result from this match.

“Those who watched the Flames beat Ethiopia will agree with me that they are not a bad side. They put us under a lot of pressure and nearly grabbed an equaliser. After the Sunday match, Ethiopia are now familiar with our stadium. This gives them the edge over Egypt,” he said.

Malawi and Egypt are tied at three points apiece but The Flames lead Group D because they have two goals.

The Flames started the qualifiers with a 2-1 victory over Ethiopia while Egypt edged Guinea 1-0.

The Flames are in action against Guinea this evening in Conakry.
