Football Association of Malawi (Fam) realised over K60 million in gate revenue from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier between Malawi and Ethiopia at Bingu National Stadium Sunday.

The association printed about 31,000 tickets for the match which was sold out before the actual date of the match.

Advance tickets for the match were selling at K2,000 for the open stand.

By Tuesday last week, tickets for VIP and Corporate boxes were sold out.

Tickets for VIP stands were selling at K8,000 whereas K10,000 was the charge for Corporate seats.

This is the first time that Fam had sold tickets in advance for the match.

Additionally, the gate revenue also breaks the 2017 Airtel Top 8 Cup final between Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers which grossed K54 million at the same venue.

However, Fam Commercial and Marketing Director Limbani Matola said the demand for tickets was too high.

“This is a step in the right direction and we are happy with the gate revenue. There are some of the areas we need to address going forward,” Matola said.

Asked if Fam had missed an opportunity to generate more revenues, Matola said they printed 31,000 instead of 41,000 tickets due to Covid restrictions.

Sports analyst, Parley Chinyama said he was not surprised that tickets were sold out for the match.

This was the first time for the Flames to play in Lilongwe since 2019 after they played out to a goal-less draw against Morocco.
