Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has disclosed that the three-year deal it signed with South African firm International Apparel Design Institute (Isadi) to supply kits for the Flames is undergoing review process.
Fam and the South African firm signed a three-year deal in January 2018 which is expected to expire by January next year.
However, with football being halted across the globe due to Covid-19, the sales of the replica kits have also been affected raising fear that the association might have lost a lot of revenue.
Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda said the review process would resume once the Covid-19 period was over.
“The deal is undergoing a performance review process. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected the process but once we overcome it will be concluded and submitted to the Executive Committee for guidance on the way forward,” Gunda said in a written response.
Recently, the association announced that it received a consignment of 2000 replica kits. Fam disclosed that the price for the replica kits has been hiked and will hit the market once football resumes.
Local football analyst and coach, Millias Pofera said the previous deals failed to win the hearts of the fans due to poor quality.
“People complained a lot of the low quality and they expected to get an improved material. Money is another problem but the fans would still buy if the materials are of high quality,” Pofera said.
As part of the deal, Isad supply kits to both men’s and women’s national teams as well replica kits for the fans.
Isadi is owned by former Bafana, Fulham and Cardiff City star Kagisho Dikgacoi and Japanese investors. Fam sealed a deal with Isad after it did not renew the contract with United Kingdom (UK) kit manufacturer Umbro after the expiry of the deal. Previously, the Flames had used kits from Puma and Umbro among others.
