Flames move a step up

Malawi national football team has moved with one step up to 123 from position on the latest Fifa World rankings released on Thursday.

In Africa, Malawi is ranked 32.

Reacting to the development, Flames Head Coach, Meck Mwase, said there was still room for improvement.

The former TN Stars mentor said the senior side needed more friendly matches before playing their next assignments in Fifa World Cup qualifiers in March next year.

“We need to be active and this is why we [coaches] have proposed to train monthly so that the team should not lose its shape,” he said.

Former Flames Team Manager and Defender, Clement Kafwafwa, said the Flames should utilize Fifa Calendar dates by playing international friendly matches to improve on Fifa rankings.

Kafwafwa feared staying idle would affect the teams’ progress.

“We are slowly making improvements and we need to stay active by playing regularly on Fifa sanctioned dates,” he said.

Flames drew 1-1 against Lesotho in a friendly match in Maseru before beating South Sudan 1-0 in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Three days after beating South Sudan, Malawi lost to Uganda 2-0 in Kampala.

Meanwhile, Belgium are still ruling the world as they remain on position one in the world with France on position two while England are third.

Senegal are kings in Africa while in the world they are on position 20 while Tunisia have moved two steps upcoming second in Africa and 27 in the world.
